(Beijing, August 9) -- The Women's Individual Sabre competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games started with two surprise eliminations at the fencing Hall on Saturday with reigning world champion Elena Nechaeva of Russia and World No. 8 Leonore Perrus of France crashing out during the round of 32.
The Games lasted only one bout for 2007 world champion Nechaeva. The Russian was outscored by Polish fencer Irena Wieckowska who came back from 9-5 down to win 15-12.
The crucial moment between Nechaeva and Wieckowska came when the referee, after consulting the video replay, changed a hit which would have given Nechaeva a two point lead at 13-11. From 12-12 onwards Wieckowska was the only fencer to score.
The French Sabre squad has taken an early exit at the Games with fencers Anne-Lise Touya, Leonore Perrus and Carole Vergne all losing their Round of 32 bouts.
Touya lost 15-13 to Hungarian Orsolya Nagy and Vergne lost 15-14 to Kim Keumhwa of the Republic of Korea.
Perrus sensationally lost her first bout of the Games against lower-ranked Azza Besbes of Tunisia. The Frenchwoman had the lead during the first round but was behind 8-6 going into the second, finally losing 15-11.
The decisive touch was made when a ruling made by the video referee changed Perrus' twelfth point to the winning one for her opponent.
Besbes is 30th in the current Federation Internationale D'Escrime world rankings and celebrated her victory in front of enthusiastic fans at the Fencing Hall.
Medal placings in the Women's Individual Sabre will be decided tonight, Saturday, August 9.
